CORE Advising Checklist
BEFORE THE SEMESTER STARTS:
- Read and review your conditional reinstatement email to ensure you understand the conditions of your reinstatement
- Schedule and attend a meeting with your CORE advisor
- Finalize your schedule
- Organize yourself for the semester: Use a planner or Calendar and keep track of important academic dates/deadlines and personal obligations
DURING THE SEMESTER
- Go through all your syllabi to ensure you understand the grading policy and have made note of any due dates and examinations
- Go to a professor's office hours or connect with them before/after class
- Meet with your CORE advisor to discuss the first weeks of the semester
- Meet with your major/minor advisor and CORE advsior to discuss upcoming registration
- Check your registration date on SOLAR and register on that date

Course-Based Tutoring Free Course-Based Tutoring is available through the Academic Success and Tutoring Center. If scheduling a course-based tutoring session doesn’t work out, you could also explore the possibility of participating in one of the following options: In-Person, Drop-In Tutoring (select courses) Residential Tutoring Centers (Intro MAT, CHE, BIO & PHY courses) STAR-NY Online Drop-In Tutoring (psychology, economics, math, chemistry, biology, physics, etc.) Writing Center (any writing project or course) |
Skill-Based Peer Tutoring Skill-Based Tutoring is also offered through the Academic Success and Tutoring Center. Skill-based peer tutors help their peers develop and enhance their academic success techniques in areas such as time management, studying, using evidence-based learning strategies, academic goal setting, and using campus resources. |
Peer Assisted Learning Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) sessions are available for MAP 103, MAT 123, MAT 125 or MAT 126. Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is a peer-facilitated learning enhancement model designed to impact the way students learn difficult content in a specific course. PAL is attached to course sections to provide students with a systematic and structured approach for processing the course material assigned by the instructor. During PAL sessions, students work together to gain a deeper understanding of the course content. The environment is informal and students are encouraged to discuss course content and share study strategies. Click here to view the PAL session schedule and details. Counseling Please contact a counselor to discuss their services and your interest in counseling. Both options listed below are covered by the student fees included in your semester bill. SBU TimelyCare - Telehealth platform that provides 24/7 virtual access to medical and mental health services. You can use this to schedule virtual appointments with a counselor, therapist or social worker. CAPS - Counseling and psychological services for students. They typically post availability 2 days in advance, so you may have to check more than once to schedule an appointment. Help for students with urgent mental health needs is also available 24/7. At any time of day or night, you can call 631-632-6720. |
